To make these industrial sacks, Fiorini used a starch based glue. However, this glue had a very different ratio to Duynie's Novinexx CPB. As a result, they used much more starch at a time. What is sidestream potato starch and why is it sustainable?

Duynie is a producer of sustainable native potato starch and modified potato starch. Potato starch forms the basis for our high performing adhesives for industrial solutions. What means sustainability in the paper sack industry?

Sustainability, in addition to efficiency and quality, plays a decisive role in the choice of packaging. Paper bags have a lot of advantages in terms of sustainability; they save resources, are biodegradable and can be recycled and made available to the paper sack industry again. A paper bag biodegrades in 2-4 months, where it takes about 100 years for a plastic bag. How does Duynie’s paper sack glue contribute to Fiorini’s eco-friendly paper sack?

Fiorini select their products from the raw materials used. The paper used to produce the paper sacks is sourced from certified forests. They also use water-based inks to reduce the waste of paper. And in an attempt to restrict the use of chemical based glues they mainly use natural glues, such as potato starch. This is how they arrived at Duynie's starch solutions.

The natural binding qualities of potato starch makes it an ideal basis for paper sack adhesives. They are water based and easily biodegradable. “Our sustainable biodegradable adhesive does also have some important advantages on performance and convenience level. Due to the high performing ingredients, less adhesive is required which leads to lower costs in use per sack. There is no paper penetration and combined with a short setting time this leads to a lower amount of rejects”, Bas Weren explains.

Another benefit of the CPB paper sack glue is the low splashing behavior. As a result, the paper sacks are opening as intended which decreases downtime due to cleaning.

How does the cooperation work in practice?

The Technical Sales Specialist of Duynie tests with a batch on location at Fiorini’s plant to showcase all its advantages during a small-scale factory test, as well as to check if any changes must be made to the production process.
