For strong and healthy growth, animals need high-quality feed with sufficient energy, vitamins and minerals. To an important extent, these nutrients are provided through feed concentrates, which are partly made using grains and soya. Dutch feed producers use soya in order to get the most out of all ingredients.

Where possible, Dutch livestock feed consists of side stream products and other substances not fit for human consumption. This also applies for the soya that is used.

The soya that goes into livestock feed is soybean scrap, which is a by-product of soya oil. Furthermore, Dutch feed producers and suppliers only import soya that is 100% certified deforestation-free soya. Attempts are ongoing to grow soyabeans in the Netherlands, but this is hindered by the climate. To nonetheless reduce dependency on imported soya, the chain is continually seeking alternatives to replace soya. By using local products and side stream ingredients, we are steadily approaching a local circular system.
