The food industry is facing some tough sustainability challenges and is in the transition from linear to circular models. Residual flows like brewers’ spent grains, wheat yeast concentrate and potato steam pealings (co-products) that are used as animal feed play a major role at the beginning of the food value chain. The food industry is looking for solutions to create a more sustainable food value chain and co-products have an increasingly important role. Legal compliance and meeting customer expectations are essential in this regard.
During the lecture Derk van Manen gave insight into the efforts made by the animal feed sector with regard to co-products to safetyguard the quality of human food.
