Sourcing potato starch for energy solutions

Tarik explains how the cooperation started. ‘Back in 2010, one of our clients requested a cold water-soluble modified starch specifically from potatoes. This client favored the specific characteristics of potato starch. We contacted several potato starch producers and connected with Duynie. At that time, Duynie had just finished a new production line capable of supplying the required quality and quantity.’

‘One of the first production runs from this line was delivered to our customer. Of course, there were some initial issues, as expected with any new production line. However, Duynie's exceptional service in resolving these issues ensured we met our customer's requirements.’

The solution

Drilling starch with the right characteristics

‘Drilling starch is essential in well drilling. In the UAE, we need to drill to depths of 8,000 to 9,000 feet’, Tarik explains. ‘Modified potato starch is added to a mud formulation to control viscosity and fluid loss, helping bring the drilling cuttings to the surface. To work effectively, the starch must resist high temperatures up to 250 degrees. Consistency is crucial, and both Duynie's Stabodrill and Drillamyl products are consistent, safe, and reliable in their applications. Besides, Duynie products are based on natural biopolymers, offering a solution without harming the environment.’

Multiple substitutes for potato starch exist, so why choose this product? ‘It comes down to the raw material's inherent properties. Potato starch has the right core characteristics, like resistance to high temperatures. Wheat and corn starch require many additives. The product's efficiency reduces costs and time by allowing no loss of time during drilling.’
